The importance of bone health at all ages

This World Osteoporosis day (October 20th) we’re talking about the importance of keeping bones healthy.

Osteoporosis is characterised by low bone density making bones thin and brittle and is a leading cause of hip fracture in the over 50’s. In fact, it’s estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will be affected by an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.  Post menopausal women are particularly at risk.

Throughout life our bones are constantly repairing, going through a process of breaking down and removing old bone cells and replacing them with new ones.  This totally normal process is known as bone turnover.

As we age, however our bones start to lose mineral content more quickly than they are accumulating it. This can lead to a reduction in the total amount of bone tissue in our body. When this happens bones become weaker and more prone to fractures.  Loss of bone can happen in both men and women, but is often accelerated during menopause, leaving some older women particularly vulnerable to fractures, bone pain and loss of mobility.

While there is not much we can do about our age, the good news is there are some positive steps you can take right now to help protect your bones and in some cases even slow down this age related loss of bone mass. You might also be interested to know that taking care of bone health is not something that we should leave until later in life.

Our bodies reach peak bone density in our early 20’s and just like a bank account, it’s a good idea to build up a buffer of bone funds to ensure that when we are older we have more bone density to draw on when bone turnover starts to accelerate.

It's important from an early age that we are consuming sufficient bone nutrition so that we can reach that peak bone mass and leave our bones in the best possible starting position for when we start to lose bone later in life.

Children and younger adults need to consume sufficient protein and calcium rich food, and for older adults, regular, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise, adequate Vitamin D, not smoking and avoiding excessive alcohol intake are all important too.

AiOra 04 Natural Calcium is not only a great source of well absorbed calcium, containing as much calcium in a single daily dose of 2 capsules as a glass of whole milk, but also contains some very “bone friendly” proteins that may help your body to slow age-related bone loss.

We’ve specially developed this product to deliver just the right amount of calcium safely into the bloodstream so that your bones can make the best use of it.  Great news for bones!
